How do you sharpen a straight carving gouge?
Quick answer: Sharpening a straight gouge is three separate jobs. First you grind the main bevel to the angle your wood needs, low for basswood and higher for oak. Then you take the coarse marks out on a finer grit. Last you hone the outside micro bevel and the small inside bevel until the steel shows your face.

A straight gouge needs three passes, not one. You shape the long bevel on a coarse wheel first, at whatever angle the timber in front of you is asking for. Next comes a finer grit that wipes the scratches away. Felt and compound finish it, outside first and the hollow of the flute last of all.
Did you ever push a brand new gouge into a piece of basswood and feel the thing fight you? Did your elbow climb almost level with your shoulder before the edge would bite at all? Your hands are fine. The bevel on that tool was ground for a shipping box, and nobody at the factory was thinking about your bench.
I bought my first real set a long time ago. Half a thousand dollars for a few gouges. I knew how to sharpen one tool, and I had no idea how to sharpen a whole set of them, and working that out cost me years of ruined edges and evenings I will never get back. What took me years you can have in an afternoon.
What decides whether the gouge slices or tears
- The angle belongs to the wood in front of you, never to the tool in your hand. Basswood wants it low. Oak wants far more metal standing behind the very tip.
- Grinding is where the work actually happens, and honing only finishes what the coarse wheel already decided.
- A straight gouge carries three bevels, and one of them lives inside the flute where you cannot see it.
- Blue steel is dead steel.
- Pressure buys you nothing. The abrasive takes the metal whether you lean on it or not.
- The last minute of grinding decides the whole edge, so that is the minute to stop relaxing.
Why does a brand new gouge fight you?
Factory bevels are short and steep because a steep bevel survives shipping, stacking and a dozen customers picking the tool up. I have a number seven by Ashley Iles, made in England, and beside it a second gouge of exactly the same thickness that I have never touched. Same profile. Completely different animal.
Put the untouched one on the wood and the tool lies down on its own bevel. You cannot carve. You raise your hand, then your wrist, then almost the elbow, and you push the edge in at a strange angle and hope. Plenty of carvers work exactly like that every day and get real work done. When I carve oak I reach for that steep bevel myself, because it is stronger and oak punishes a thin edge.
Now take the reground one. The bevel runs about half an inch back from the edge, roughly 13 mm, and it sits so low that when you lay your hand down your second hand comes to rest on the wood as well. You are already carving. Your wrist stays where it belongs and your hand never climbs. Fine detail lives right there, and regrinding is what almost every gouge in this shop has been through.
What angle should a carving gouge have?
Low for soft wood and higher for hard wood, and I cannot give you a number in degrees because I have never measured one. On my basswood tools the angle might be five degrees, maybe under five. On the oak tools it is steep enough that there is real meat behind the edge. Take a low angle into oak and the odds of snapping the corner off go up fast, because there is nothing left back there to hold it.

Every shape in this course wants a slightly different treatment, which is why the sharpening course walks through them one at a time instead of handing you a single number. A spoon gouge rolls differently. A back bent gouge hardly touches the wheel where you expect. The straight gouge is the one to learn first, because everything else is a variation on what your hands do here.
Which machine do I use, and why not a bench grinder?
My workhorse is a Work Sharp, and it has been my favourite setup for four or five years now. Whoever invented that machine is a genius. It is glass wheels with abrasive stuck to them, nothing clever, and you can buy the abrasive separately or glue your own sticky sandpaper on a half inch MDF disc and skip the twenty dollars a wheel.
A regular bench grinder takes too much metal too fast and burns the edge while you are still deciding. This one never burns anything. It goes slowly and still eats the steel quickly, and you can rest your bare palm right against the wheel while it turns, which tells you everything about how much heat is in it. The machine wants neither water nor oil. I carve outdoors on job sites sometimes, and I live in Florida, where the sky can be clear and then suddenly the heavens open and pour water on you, so a setup I can pack in two minutes matters more than it sounds.
I run four grits on one tool. Eighty for the grinding. Two hundred and twenty to take the coarse marks out. Then thirty six hundred, and last a six thousand, and I will be honest with you, I said eight thousand on camera before I looked at what I had written on the paper myself. Six thousand is plenty. I go there because I like the mirror, not because the edge needs it.
How do you hold the gouge against the wheel?
Two ways, and both of them work. You can hold the tool in your fingers, or you can buy a jig. I use a rod on the Tormek pattern that accepts Tormek jigs, and the one I reach for is the SVS-32 short tool jig, a simple thing with two sides and a cavity that takes the shank of the tool. My Tormek 2000 is the old metal bodied model and I bought every jig they made when the idea first came out.
Clamp the gouge near the middle of the jig, though the middle is not critical, and set the rod height. The rod is what sets your angle, not the jig. Lower it and the bevel gets longer. Raise it and you are cutting a micro bevel. I never move the rod when I change wheels, so every grit lands on the very same spot as the last one.
Before the wheel touches anything, colour the bevel with a marker. Black, red, whatever is on the bench. After three passes you can see exactly where the abrasive has been and where it has not, and that is worth more than any amount of squinting.
Start at the left side of the wheel and roll the tool across, moving in and out so you use the whole face of the abrasive instead of wearing a groove in one spot. Keep your finger back from the edge. Light. If you lean on it you slow the wheel down, and it still takes the same metal off the back, so all the pressure bought you was a slower machine.
Stay away from the two corners at first. Some people insist the corners must come to needle points. Not necessarily true. We are carving wood here, we are not entering the tool in a beauty show, and a corner that is merely clean does the job. If you do want to reach into the tightest ground, that is what a fishtail shape is for, and the fishtail is a different conversation.
When almost nothing is left of the old bevel, stop relaxing. This is the moment the whole edge is decided. Check after every pass. I leave maybe a sixty fourth of an inch, less than half a millimetre, and then I stop grinding and go to the finer wheels.
Why three bevels and not one?
Each bevel does a different job for your hand. The main bevel is the long low one that lets the tool lie on the wood. A second, much shorter one sits right at the tip and gives the steel a little backbone so it does not fold over. The third one is inside the flute, and almost nobody talks about it.
Raise the rod a touch and cut that short tip bevel exactly the way you ground the long one. Then the felt. I lay the felt wheel straight on top of the sandpaper wheel, put three fingers on the tool, and feel my way onto the long bevel rather than looking at it.
Green paste first, then blue. Mine are Koch, made in Germany, and I buy them from Woodcraft. That is a preference and it does not have to be yours. The ordinary green bar works, the yellow one from Flexcut works, people swear by both. I like the Koch because it is harder than the usual green and does not smear everywhere when the wheel picks it up.
Watch the felt. Where you have been working it turns black, and black means steel is coming off, so honing is not just polishing, it is still removing metal. Barely any pressure. The paste does the work while you hold the tool steady, and if you want the long version of this stage on its own, the stropping and honing lessons take it apart across seven videos.
Now the inside. I use a an Arkansas slip stone, dry, and I move it one direction only, outwards. Other carvers work it back and forth. I have never found that it helps. Less than a sixty fourth of an inch of inside bevel is all I want, and that tiny bevel is what lets you lift the gouge out of a deep cut instead of levering it out and tearing the wood.
What does blue steel mean?
Blue means you overheated the edge and drew the temper out of it. The steel is soft there now and it will not hold an edge no matter how beautifully you polish it. You killed the tool and wasted the money.
A blued tool is still worth saving. Grind the blue away, eat back into fresh steel, and the tool comes back, just narrower than it was. How much narrower depends on how far the heat travelled. This is the single best argument for a slow wheel that never heats anything, and it is why I stopped taking carving gouges anywhere near a dry bench grinder years ago.
Where carpenter's chisels part company with gouges
Carving gouges take a short secondary bevel on the outside. Bench chisels absolutely must not. Put one on a carpenter's chisel and you will never pare a straight wall again, and the first place you will notice is your dovetails. I sharpen my flat chisels by hand, on stones, and the Work Sharp never touches them.
Plenty of carvers will tell you that a machine costs you all your control. On a dry grinder they are right. Here you are rolling the tool yourself, watching the marker disappear, feeling the bevel, and the scratch pattern comes out cleaner than a grinder ever gave me. Same skill, different speed.
Put the finished gouge into basswood and it goes through like butter. The wood is your only test. Not the mirror, not the grit number, not what anybody says on the internet. The wood tells you, and it never lies to you.

Here is the honest part. Professional basswood is not cheap, and neither are good tools. Neither is your time, and you will spend a great deal of it standing at a wheel before any of this stops needing your attention. You have to be real about that. But sharpening is the one skill that turns every tool in the rack into yours. Come and learn it properly.
How it's done
- Pick an angle to suit the timber. Soft wood takes a long shallow slope. Hard wood wants that edge backed up by far more metal.
- Colour it in. Run a marker over the whole slope so you can watch the abrasive eat it away, pass by pass.
- Grind on eighty grit. Set the rod height, clamp the tool into the jig, then roll it steadily across the face of the abrasive and back again.
- Clean up on two twenty. Swap to the finer side and work off the deep scratch marks left behind by the coarse paper.
- Polish at thirty six hundred, then six thousand. Leave the rod where it was, so each finer grit lands on the same ground as the one before it.
- Raise the rod for the tip. Lift the bar two or three degrees and cut a narrow secondary slope right at the very end of the tool.
- Hone on felt with paste. Green compound first for speed, blue afterwards for finish, with barely any weight resting on your hand.
- Stone the hollow of the flute. Draw a slip stone outwards along the inner curve until a hairline appears, and then stop.
- Try it on a scrap. Push the edge across end grain. A finished gouge leaves a shining surface and asks almost nothing of your arm.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a carving gouge be resharpened?
Most days the felt wheel and a little compound bring the edge back in thirty seconds. Full regrinding belongs to three situations only: changing the angle, repairing damage, or reshaping a new tool whose factory geometry does not suit the work you do.
Can you sharpen a gouge without any machine?
Hand work on stones and slips reaches the identical result, and always has done. Machines exist for people who carve all day. Losing an hour per tool is not an option for them. Learning by hand first teaches your fingers what a correct slope feels like.
What grit do you start with on a damaged edge?
Eighty grit shifts metal fast without heating the steel on a slow glass wheel. Anything coarser risks chewing straight past the damage into good metal. A hundred and twenty also works and leaves a kinder surface to tidy up afterwards.
